Opeth Blanket Album Review


Opeth is the Swedish death metal powerhouses, decided to take a different approach with their latest album In Cauda Venenum. Opeth Merch isn't entirely progressive, but is it's a mix of slow, sludgey and prog rock. It's certainly an improvement from their previous releases.




Cauda Venenum is something like a mix of Heritage and Pale Communion, which we've previously looked at. This is their best album in 10 years. Even though it's not the album that would get anyone back into the band or replace their previous style It's an excellent album that will please all fans.



Although it's difficult to believe that the band hasn't changed after all these years, In Cauda Venenum confirms that the definition of success doesn't need to be more than a decade. They're still incredibly powerful, and with In Cauda Venenum they've achieved an level of musical proficiency which only a handful of bands have achieved.



This is among the most thrilling albums in a long time, with some of their greatest songs to be released to. "Eternal Rains Will Come" The album's opening track, which is the title track of the album, is an excellent instance. It's got an aplomb of Opethian brilliance, but also retains a modern edge.



The album continues to weave into consideration hints of their prog influences, featuring Joakim Skvalberg playing a lot of keyboards, and Martin Axenrot on drums contributing plenty of warmth and character. However, they are mostly used to complement the overall theme which is the medieval foundation of the album and its unifying themes.



There are also some great rock solos on this record and the band's best vocalist Mikael is back with another amazing performance on this record. His death growls are less abrasive this time around but they're still very powerful and his voice is still full of the iconic Opethian look to it.



A few of the tracks that are on the album have a more sludgey feel to them, along with some Eastern tunes as well as a heavy guitar riff. This song is a perfect example of this song, "Cusp of Eternity". It is a mix of oriental influences and is strong enough to make the listener feel. However, it then becomes more melodic and eventually gets to incredible climaxes that leave you unsure of what's happening and where the song is heading.



The song "River" is a great track, has a fantastic solo. The song is a bit long, but it's got an excellent melody, and the band do a fantastic job of building up to the last section, in which they really take off with some epic sludgey riffing.



This record features a softer part of the music they play. It's not something that they've introduced recently but is a component of their sound overall and a key reason as to why they're extremely popular. It's an integral component of their music, and has been for decades. However, it's stunning when you listen to it all, especially on an album such as this.
