Opeth Mug Review - Heritage


Opeth are one of the most progressive death metal bands in an ever-changing world of music. They've always been a driving force for changes and have always been a pioneering band. Since the release of their debut album Orchard in 1994, they've always been different on each album. They've done this by experimenting with subtle techniques, such as experimentation with different styles of vocals or instrumental tracks that were more complex than the usual straight death metal, however occasionally , they've ventured to places that have never been heard before and it was obvious when they did it on albums like Damnation or Ghost Reveries.



With their latest album Heritage, Mikael Akerfeldt has finally shed his harsh vocals, and has gone for the more melodic and soft sound. Opeth Blanket comes as a surprise to many of their followers because it's not what was expected and the band have been known for their hard-hitting sound for a long time.



It has led to the band having a more relaxed and smooth sound that doesn't feel heavy , and is more suitable to their existing fan base. Although this is a distinct departure from their earlier sound however, it's a necessity modification if they plan to be around for a long time years.



The most significant distinct feature of this album from the previous ones is the fact that they put more emphasis on keyboards, as opposed to guitars. This was to increase the volume of songs. However, it wasn't just about using organs and backing strings. There are synths, pianos and even some deliberate production noises such as white noise, or even fake vinyl crackling.



The album also has a greater emphasis on drums and bass, in contrast to the death/doom-based drumming which was mostly focussed around Martin Lopez in past albums. The album is now having an ethereal, relaxing feel. There are also some excellent bass solos.



The majority of the musicians have played on the album, but there are some that appear more involved than others like Joakim Svalberg who has been playing the keyboard in Opeth for a while and has taken it up a level on this album. The keyboardist's playing is superb and adds to the album's mood.




Opeth's music is not new. They've been influenced and influenced by several traditional progressive rock groups over the years. It's no surprise then that Opeth is influenced by their music slightly more in the album than they have on previous albums. But, I think the most striking thing is the fact that they are able to add a real melodic element to their music. It's been a long time when they've been able achieve this, and it was refreshing to hear it again on Heritage.
