CBC News. (2019, January 11). Indigenous people face racism 'all the time' in Canada's health-care system, says nurse. CBC News. https://www.cbc.ca/news/indigenous/indigenous-racism-health-care-1.4978844

Jones, J. (2019, December 19). New data shows 'profound' disparities in income levels of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Global News. https://globalnews.ca/news/6314411/indigenous-peoples-canada-income-disparities/

In reading the two articles about Indigenous people in Canada, one about income disparities and the other about racism in the health care system, I have gained a deeper understanding of the issues faced by this population.

The first article by Jones (2019) highlights the economic disparities faced by Indigenous Peoples in Canada. According to a report by Statistics Canada, Indigenous Peoples in Canada have lower incomes and higher poverty rates than non-Indigenous Canadians. This disparity is most pronounced in urban areas, where Indigenous Peoples earn on average 81 cents for every dollar earned by non-Indigenous Canadians. In some rural areas, the disparity is even greater, with Indigenous Peoples earning only 63 cents for every dollar earned by non-Indigenous Canadians. This data is startling and highlights the ongoing impact of colonization and systemic discrimination on Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

The second article by CBC News (2019) sheds light on the racism faced by Indigenous Peoples in Canada's health care system. The article highlights the experience of a nurse who witnessed racist comments and actions towards Indigenous patients by fellow health care workers. Indigenous Peoples have historically faced discrimination in the health care system, resulting in lower health outcomes and a lack of trust in the system. The article highlights the need for cultural competency training for health care workers and systemic changes in the health care system to address these issues.

The information provided in these articles could prompt members of society to take action towards creating a more equitable society. The information in these articles is crucial to understanding the impact of systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples in Canada. It is essential to recognize the ongoing harm caused by colonization and discrimination and to work towards reconciliation and creating a more just society.

In conclusion, reading these articles has provided me with a greater understanding of the challenges faced by Indigenous Peoples in Canada. The economic disparities and ongoing discrimination in the health care system are just two examples of the many challenges faced by this population. It is crucial to continue to learn about these issues, to recognize the ongoing harm caused by systemic discrimination, and to work towards reconciliation and creating a more equitable society.
