Know the signs of frost:
When the temperatures start to drop, many people dread the thought of frost. This dreaded weather event can cause costly damage to plants and trees, as well as your home’s exterior. Here are five tips for keeping your lawn healthy and frost-free this winter:
1. Mulch. One of the best ways to prevent frost is by mulching your lawn. This will help retain moisture and keep the ground warm under the soil. Additionally, a layer of mulch will keep grass from standing up due to exposure to cold air and wind.
2. Water frequently. Keep your lawn wet all winter long by giving it regular water. This will help avoid dry patches that may lead to frost damage. Try not to irrigate during extremely cold weather, as this can also further freeze ground moisture in place and encourage frost formation.
3. Clear away debris regularly. Mound up leaves, branches, and other debris on top of the soil over fall and winter months –this will create an insulating “blanket” that can keep surface temperatures cool in the summertime when the sun is shining strongest (think about a solar blanket for an outdoor space). Remove any large objects or trimming before covering them with mulch or snow!
4..Maintain weed control.
Prepare your lawn for frost:
Lawncare tips to beat the frost this winter:
1. Clean your lawn of any leaves, debris, or mowing residue. This will help to minimize ice accumulation on the grass surface.
2. Water your lawn well before a freeze is expected; a dry lawn can help to prevent ice build-up. The frozen ground will not absorb water as well as wet one, so be sure to provide adequate moisture for the best results.
3. Avoid direct contact with ice and snow; do not walk on icy surfaces or drive in snow/ice-covered conditions. If necessary, park in a warm area and exit your vehicle. Keep pets inside when temperatures drop below freezing.
4. Move cars and other large objects off of sidewalks and driveways; they can act as wind chills that damage plants below them and cause ice to form on their trunks and hoods overnight during freezes or cold snaps. Clear paths so pedestrians, bicyclists, cars, etc., can easily pass by safely during the daytime hours when it’s above freezing but less treacherous at night time (or early morning).
