Apple Watch Fall Detection
Originally introduced with the Series 4, Apple Watch Fall Detection is a vital safety feature that lets older adults (and those who are predisposed to falls) know when they’ve fallen and can help get them to emergency services. The feature works by detecting a hard fall, contacting emergency services and sending an alert to emergency contacts via the watch or iPhone.
When it’s on, a vibrating tap will sound on your wrist when you fall and an alarm will be triggered. If you don’t dismiss the alert within 60 seconds, Apple Watch will call emergency services for you.
The Apple Watch is also able to track your health through the Health app and provide a variety of other health data that you can review. This includes the date and time of each fall that you’ve experienced since you started using it, as well as an analysis of your fall’s impact on your fitness.
But while fall detection is an important tool, Apple cautions that it can’t detect all falls. In addition, it may interpret “high-impact” activity as a fall, which can trigger an alert even when you’re not actually falling.
Apple says that it gathered fall detection data from a large group of people--including athletes, patients at movement disorder clinics and assisted living facilities, and friends of Apple employees--to help them develop their algorithm. Then it trained it to pick up on the nuances of what makes up a real fall, and how it differs from a regular event during a sport. Medical alert
