The Cotton Club is one of the most well-known clubs in New York City, especially for hipsters. It is located in a large warehouse with an open space that allows musicians to perform every week.

Aosta Discoteche Club opened in 1920, when heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson rented the upper level of the building at the intersection of 142nd Street and Lenox Avenue in Harlem. He christened the establishment "Club Deluxe." In Salerno Discoteche Club , Owney Madden, a white prominent bootlegger, and gangster from England, took over the club and changed its name to "The Cotton Club."

While blacks were initially not allowed to enter the club, it was the home of many popular entertainers such as Fletcher Henderson and Jimmie Lunceford, Chick webb, Louis Armstrong and Count Basie.

In 1936, following a race riot broke out in Harlem The Cotton Club was closed temporarily and then reopened at a new location at Broadway and 48th Street. The club's owners were certain that the Cotton Club would be a success at this new location.

However, the Cotton Club had a long history of discriminatory policies and segregation practices. Photographer Carl Van Vechten, who was a frequent visitor to the Cotton Club, vowed to quit the club until racist policies were eliminated.

The Cotton Club was moved to an alternative location following a settlement. This allowed for the club's segregation policies to be adjusted and made it more accessible to black patrons. The Cotton Club hosted some of the most well-known entertainers of the day and was an event where young black people could meet in New York City.

The Cotton Club was known for its musical revues, dancing, comedy, variety acts as well as a popular house band. Many of the performers began their careers in the Cotton Club's jazz music.
