The Cotton Club was temporarily closed in 1936, following the outbreak of a race riot in Harlem. It was opened again in 1936 at Broadway and 48th Street. The club's owners believed that the Cotton Club would succeed in this new location.

However the Cotton Club had a long history of discriminatory policies and segregation practices. Photographer Carl Van Vechten, who was a regular at the Cotton Club, vowed to not attend the club until racism was eliminated.

The Cotton Club was moved to an alternative location following a settlement. This allowed for the club's segregation policy to be reformed and made more accessible to black audiences.
