Brent Faiyaz Hoodies is an iconic part of hip-hop culture. His voice is soft and not overbearing which makes him stand out among his peers.
He is also a lyricist, and his music is some of the most honest in today's world. Although his songs often focus on love and the lack thereof, he also addresses other topics like police brutality and sex. He has a raw honesty that you won't find in the industry.
The album opens with clips that discuss his reputation, aptly named "VILLAIN’S THEME", before he sets out on a journey to find his moral centre. Wasteland is all about the tension between vices and intentions. It is a delicate balance between loving a lifestyle which actively discourages love and loving one that does.
This ambiguous balance is what makes Wasteland such a complex and ambitious work of art. Brent Faiyaz T-shirt of songwriting, production and imagination is rare these days.
Brent Faiyaz's captivating vocals are featured on some of the greatest tracks on the album. He poured his heart and soul into the first track, "Price of Fame". He added beautiful instrumentals and slowed down his vocals. It was the perfect tempo for his trademark crooning.
He does it again with "Heal Your Heart", where he sings of healing his heart from the anger and pain he feels. It's a beautiful song that opens the album.
A choral intro slows down the song and introduces beautiful instrumentals. Then, he returns to the song to sing over them. It's a wonderful song, and one of my favourite songs he has ever written.
However, some songs feel more like an album side project than a part of his larger work. They still feel just as good as the rest.
This album is great and I can understand why it is so popular in hip-hop. It's a great listen for those who like music that is more mature than some of the popular songs and rappers out right now.
