Personal Statement
South Gate, the city I was born and raised in has greatly contributed into shaping both my dreams and aspirations.There has been a various amount of experiences I’ve gone through that have benefited who I am today. One thing that has shaped who I am today is being involved with music as it has helped me become a dedicated person to whatever I set my mind to. Inspiring me to pursue my goals of a higher education to successfully contribute to my community as well as my family. Also, being involved in community events and attending every one of my school years in this city has helped me analyze the struggle of few who revolve around me everyday.
Our city is filled with low-income families where students commonly worry about whether the annual income of their parents will contribute to the fulfillment of their educational goals. I’ve witnessed many people go through struggles and soon fall out of a great path that they could’ve been destined to be a part of because they thought there was no opportunities left for them. One great person who has inspired me and shaped who I am today is my father.I’ve personally seen my father become more and more successful each year through hard work. Viewing the world through this perspective has helped me acknowledge that it is possible to successfully pursue dreams with hard work, tenacity, and dedication. This experience has influenced me to adopt this idea to every situation I face in life in order to pull through with everything I plan to achieve.
I’ve learned to become a tenacious person through my experience in music. Music has taught me that you learn best through hard work as long as you demonstrate tenacity. For example, the first few attempts of learning how to play an instrument. I started playing the guitar over a year ago and I struggled consecutively every day as I expected every single note to be played perfectly within minutes.There was moments where I thought this process would be impossible, but I never gave up on my goal of learning how play adequately. After a few months, I began to develop some skill in the instrument and it taught me something extremely important. It taught me that the best way to effectively learn is through struggle. This has inspired me to be prepared and go through whatever it takes to reach my goals with a higher education.
Lastly, being involved in different extracurricular activities in school has strongly shaped the person I am today. My experience football and volleyball for about two years has taught me how to work well with others and the benefits of communicating effectively with people around you. I’ve adopted my communication skills into the real world now and feel a lot better when working with others and do not hesitate in being the first to help another person when they’re in need of assistance. My experience in ASB for almost a year now has taught me how to be leader. I am confident when speaking to a big audience and seem to communicate just as effectively than with an individual person.
In conclusion, these experiences that benefited who I am today have inspired me to pursue greater goals with a higher education. Experiences varying from music to participation in sports. Now that I’ve now developed a few skills of my own, I’ve become a dedicated person and look forward to meeting great expectations when pursuing my goals. Looking forward to what the future has in store for me so that I can develop even greater skills and meet successful goals. In order to give back to the community that has shaped who I am today.
