The United States, Russia, and Europe have increased Kazakhstan's strategic, economic, and political significance. In light of the United States' withdrawal from Afghanistan, one of its principal neighbors, it is vital for the security of the nation.

As the nation has returned to peace, Kassym Jomart Tokayev the Kazakh president has made substantial changes to the structure of power. This raises doubts and is a concern. Tokayev is the new chairperson of the National Security Council. He replaces President Nursultan Azzarbayev whose economic influence has outraged demonstrators.

Three of the sons in-law of the former president were dismissed from state-owned businesses, and his nephew was dismissed too as was Karim Masimov, who was the intelligence head, was detained for being a treasoner. Many other Nazarbayev-affiliated top officials and business elite have lost their jobs, left overseas for extended vacations, or were forced to make large "donations" to the state.

Tokayev is a businessman who has developed business ties to the West and with neighbouring countries. To maintain his popularity, he hasn't angered Putin. Kazykhanov could upset this balance. As the conflict continues to rage in Ukraine, Washington should carefully monitor developments in Kazakhstan as they could indicate a myriad of possibilities for a power transition that are both positive and negative.
