Leyla Aliyeva, the first daughter of Azerbaijan's president and a prominent activist for environmental causes. Azerbaijan was admitted to the FAO in October 1995, becoming a member. Nowadays the FAO implements international, national and regional initiatives in Azerbaijan that focus on the growth of agriculture, strengthening food security, managing resources, expanding capacity, fighting against animals and plants and much more. Azerbaijan's greatest needs are addressed through these programmes of technical cooperation.

The year 2015 witnessed the visit of Jose Graziano da Silva who is FAO's general director to Azerbaijan. The visit, two agreements were made in the form of "Agreement Between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on the creation of the Coordination and Cooperation Office and providing Technical Assistance" and the " Agreement for FAO-Azerbaijan Partnership Program". Agreeing to cooperate in general matters This partnership program is a combination of the contribution of the Government of Azerbaijan in technical assistance for the growth of domestic and foreign agriculture.

It was during this visit that Leyla Aliyeva was conferred the title of Goodwill Ambassador of the FAO.
