What is UV Printing and how can it help you?
UV printing, a digital type of printing that uses ultraviolet light to cure or dry ink while it's being spread on the surface, is a form of digital printing. As the printer passes over each spot where the ink has been printed, Ultraviolet lights follow close behind, instantly "curing" or drying the ink.
Ultraviolet print allows you to directly print onto almost any flat or 3D media. This allows you to create custom products. This is one reason it has become popular in packaging solutions companies; when UV ink is printed directly onto a substrate and exposed to ultraviolet light, it instantly solidifies from the liquid.
What is the difference between conventional printing and ultraviolet printing?
Inks with special solvents are used in traditional printing. They evaporate into the atmosphere when they are applied to the material. These solvents evaporate into the air, allowing ink to soak into the surface faster and leaving behind a digital image once it has dried. Spray powders can be used to speed up drying. However, this printing technique is not compatible with plastics, acrylics, foil, and other materials.
Ultraviolet (UV-) Printing Process
UV printing utilizes ultraviolet lights to dry the ink as it's printed quickly. The printer applies the ink to the surface of the material. After that, the UV lights dry it quickly. Ultraviolet printing, which is more sustainable than other methods, is currently a hot topic in the printing industry.
UV ink is printed directly on the substrate. It turns from liquid to solid almost immediately when exposed to UV radiation. You can print almost anything with UV inks because there is little to no evaporation and virtually no absorption of solvents into paper. This technology allows for direct printing on a wide range of 3-D media. It also makes it possible to customize products quickly and easily.
UV inks are quick drying and leave no VOCs behind. UV printing can be an eco-friendly technology that leaves little carbon footprint.
LED UV Printing
Led-UV printing, the latest technology in UV printing, produces wavelengths of 385-395nm (nanometer). This light spectrum is safer and more efficient than its older counterpart, giving results far superior to those achieved through traditional UV printing methods.
Printing with led UV is a more practical choice than its UV counterpart. First of all, unlike UV printing mercury lamps are not required for curing inks. Second, led UV is safer and cheaper than UV printing. Additionally, it consumes less energy than traditional UV printing.
LED UV printing offers the long-lasting quality that luxury businesses strive for. Furthermore, its faster drying time gives it greater reliability in the pharmaceutical and FMCG industries. The final printed product is enhanced with color and finished with superior quality that makes a lasting impression.
LED-UV printing is a green and environmentally friendly technology. There is no VOC (Volatile Organic Chemical) emissions during the printing process. The infrastructure required to install LED printing units is less expensive for companies, and the end result is a better product with a gloss finish.
UV Printing in Food Packaging Industry
Personalization is a rapidly growing industry worldwide. Digital UV printing offers a great way to meet that demand, increase product sales and remain competitive.
Conventional printing techniques were dangerous as food items could become contaminated if ink substances were transferred from the printing plate onto the packaging. These inks were not cured, so they could be contaminated. The final packaging of food was also not up to standards.
The use of UV inks to print food packaging has been a great success. They cure during printing and leave no harmful solvents. Food manufacturers are increasingly using this method to customize food items and maintain high quality standards.
UV Printing in Pharmaceutical Industry
Every industry has its own labeling requirements. Different industries require different printing technologies. Every brand has its own aesthetic appeal. UV printing is one type of security printing popular within the pharmaceutical sector.
The uniqueness of pharmaceutical labels (such as medical and drug brands) is that they are susceptible to forgery or counterfeiting. In order to combat these practices, UV printing is used in the pharmaceutical industry.
Pharmaceutical printing uses invisible UV inks. This has been shown to be one of most effective techniques to prevent counterfeiting in the pharmaceutical sector. These inks are not visible to the naked eye but can be lit by Ultraviolet LEDs. The unique identification numbers that are attached to every pharmaceutical item make invisible UV inks a strong deterrent for counterfeiters.
UV printing offers untold benefits
Grand Prints argues that ultraviolet printing is the future of packaging and printing. It is economical and environmentally friendly, and its business-generating advantages are vast.
LED Print Applications: LEDs are cool and dry, with very little heat output. They can be used to print on heat-sensitive substrates like self-adhesive sheets or thin slides.
UV Printing Is More Fast Than Traditional Printing. Because UV ink is evaporative during the photochemical process, it doesn't take long for inks to dry. It's almost instantaneous.
This technique is cost-effective because it takes less time to dry. You can print more because the finished product dries quickly. Plus, no aqueous coatings are necessary as with traditional inks for packaging printing.
Vibrant Finish: UV printing offers a more vibrant appearance since there is no time for the ink to soak into the paper/material. This method can create photo-realistic prints.
The Bottom Line
UV printing is an emerging industry trend that promises to expand over the coming years and find applications across various industries. Because of its eco-friendly, cost-effective, and varied nature, UV printing will be the future in packaging and printing technology.
