Tonic-clonic seizures occur when the brain is in a state of disinhibition. This state results from a severe neocortical dysfunction, which can also be accompanied by uninhibited subcortical expressions of extensor movements.
These seizures can be generalized or partial. Generalized seizures are typically brief and resolve spontaneously. Partial seizures can result in paralysis. They are characterized by jerking and rapid movement of arms and legs.
A tonic-clonic seizure may also be accompanied by a post-ictal period, a time when the body is at rest. This period can last several minutes. It may include confusion, a headache, and disorientation. When a person regains consciousness, they may become less confused.
The duration of a tonic-clonic seizure depends on the onset time and the ramp rate. Seizures lasting more than 5 minutes are considered an emergency. If a patient experiences a prolonged seizure, intravenous access should be administered.
Tonic-clonic seizures are most common during nonrapid eye movement sleep. However, they can also happen during wakefulness. For instance, in premature infants with intraventricular hemorrhage, tonic seizures are a common symptom.
During a tonic-clonic seizure, the patient can lose consciousness or be confused. There is an increased risk of falls and injury, including head injuries. emfit seizure monitor Patients with tonic-clonic seizures are at increased risk of developing bone diseases and pulmonary disorders.
Tonic-clonic seizures can be diagnosed using EEG. Most cases of these seizures have a frontal accentuation, which is a synchronous spike-wave discharge. In other cases, the activity may be diffuse.
