To exact revenge on her unfaithful husband, she hires an incompetent coach to ruin the club, hoping that he will fail and her ex-husband will blame her for the loss.

In his first week at AFC Richmond, Ted is ridiculed by the team's members for being inexperienced and folksy, but he gradually begins to win their hearts and earn their respect. Despite his lack of football experience, his charm, humor, and compassion win over Rebecca, the players, and others who have previously doubted his coaching abilities.

As the season progresses, Ted and his assistant coach Beard begin to develop a strong bond with the team, including Jamie Tartt, who struggles to pass and score. He even decides to throw a birthday party for Sam Obisanya, an African player who is homesick and has been missing family.

When he is finally able to convince Rebecca to let him lead the team, she agrees, but she is reluctant. At first, she tries to discourage him by saying that winning is not important, but she quickly realizes that the team's morale is low and that losing is worse than winning.

She tries to encourage him to resign, but he insists on staying, telling her that he does not want to hurt her and his son. He also tells her that he wants to make the team better.

Then, he tells her that the only way to do that is to be more like his father and work together to win games. He encourages the team to believe in themselves and they eventually break their 2-2 tie to win the match.
