A Castle on Oregon's Coast

Possibly the most sensational trick on all of Oregon's coast lies just outdoors of the art and culture capital of Cannon Beach, on the north coast. There's a castle a bit south of town, concealed behind the walls of trees simply north of the Arch Cape Tunnel. It's a no-pressure event, and with amazing beaches just a block away - who can blame them? Simply across the street are the beautiful, spotless sands of Arch Cape, a tiny unincorporated neighborhood which contains one store and a smattering of homes. In front of it sits a beautiful stretch of beach that runs for miles to the north, while right away to the south hovers a craggy basalt cliff, where access to a wild and weird rocky cove is sometimes given by low tides.
The spaces at St. Bernard's Bed & Breakfast are jaw dropping - at least. The "Ginger" ($179) features white and blue fabrics, asian ginger containers and a love seat, with an economy size bed from Austria. In "Gaugin" ($169) there's a comfortable window seat, a funky tub, muted pastels of a queen and the artist size bed. The spectacular "Heather" ($189) is on the leading flooring and features a personal deck, vaulted ceilings and a sitting location with a love seat. The "Parisian" ($149) features relaxing, hand painted flower wallpaper, a window seat, a wingback chair, and has a Victorian ambiance. The beautiful "Tower" is in the tower and it's big ($209), with a sitting area, big soaking tub, various antiques, and it's curtained in dreamy white lace. The "Provence" ($209) is on the garden level and is sequestered far from the rest of this small palace, with terra-cotta floors, Jacuzzi and French doors opening into a private patio area.
My room was the "Tapestry" ($209), with an amazing economy size bed, engaging tapestries on the wall and flooring, a huge French armoire, and enormous soaking tub that screams honeymoon hangout. There's a curious little reading nook with a stained glass ceiling, and the TV comes framed in a cute replica of a castle.

In the early morning, I discover the window (ironically) gazes right out to a view of Castle Rock - just offshore from Arch Cape.
Morning also suggests a luscious, premium, home cooked meal prepared by Dau herself. Dau was a chemist in her previous life in Chicago, and joked that meal making should be an extension of that part of chemists that like to cook things. (Given this castle ambiance, I laugh to myself and picture her in a laboratory coat, babbling maniacally as she whips up a meal while lighting thunders all around).
사랑가득한밤 Guests sit together in the beautiful atrium-like dining-room, where they chat and get to understand each other. I sat with a young couple from Portland and another older couple from Michigan who have actually been regulars because the location started in 1995.
