A Castle on Oregon's Coast
Oregon's coastline is full of tricks: veiled surprises and satisfaction, clandestine, deserted beaches and covert gems peppering the towns in the form of lodgings or dining establishments.
Possibly the most sensational trick on all of Oregon's coast lies just outdoors of the art and culture capital of Cannon Beach, on the north coast. There's a castle a bit south of town, concealed behind the walls of trees simply north of the Arch Cape Tunnel. You can end up being king and queen here, at this insanely romantic area that resembles something in between the Bavarian castle that inspired Disneyland's signature structure and the Oregon ski lodge included in "The Shining."
St. Bernard's Bed & Breakfast is a elegant and amazing building peppered with creative information, including seven striking guestrooms filled with antiques, gorgeous furnishings and a sense of the Victorian merged with modern grace.
On one specific night in April, I get to St. Bernard's near 8:30 p.m., and it's pitch black. I've been here before a couple of times and seen little bits of it, however for the very first time I park in back, finding the captivating strings of lights in the garden and on the walls, as well as the 2 deer figures made from light bulbs. I stop to gaze and look at these, and at the archway going through the structure, half expecting to see a member of some royal family appear in a carriage and be ushered out by some servant.
Inside the enormous front door, owner Barbara Dau welcomes me in and up the snaking, stone stairway into the living-room. Here, chandeliers and classy furniture live in the area, with a nifty little rounded nook in one corner - obviously part of the "tower." In the early nights, Barbara hosts "social hours" for the guests here, including red wine and sociability in front of the fireplace.
I get here too late for this, obviously, but Barbara informs me these can in some cases be dynamic and fun-packed, while at other times none of the visitors appear at all. It's a no-pressure event, and with amazing beaches just a block away - who can blame them? Simply across the street are the beautiful, spotless sands of Arch Cape, a tiny unincorporated neighborhood which contains one store and a smattering of homes. In front of it sits a beautiful stretch of beach that runs for miles to the north, while right away to the south hovers a craggy basalt cliff, where access to a wild and weird rocky cove is sometimes given by low tides.
The spaces at St. Bernard's Bed & Breakfast are jaw dropping - at least. The "Ginger" ($179) features white and blue fabrics, asian ginger containers and a love seat, with an economy size bed from Austria. In "Gaugin" ($169) there's a comfortable window seat, a funky tub, muted pastels of a queen and the artist size bed. The spectacular "Heather" ($189) is on the leading flooring and features a personal deck, vaulted ceilings and a sitting location with a love seat. The "Parisian" ($149) features relaxing, hand painted flower wallpaper, a window seat, a wingback chair, and has a Victorian ambiance. The beautiful "Tower" is in the tower and it's big ($209), with a sitting area, big soaking tub, various antiques, and it's curtained in dreamy white lace. The "Provence" ($209) is on the garden level and is sequestered far from the rest of this small palace, with terra-cotta floors, Jacuzzi and French doors opening into a private patio area.
My room was the "Tapestry" ($209), with an amazing economy size bed, engaging tapestries on the wall and flooring, a huge French armoire, and enormous soaking tub that screams honeymoon hangout. There's a curious little reading nook with a stained glass ceiling, and the TV comes framed in a cute replica of a castle.
사랑가득한밤 During the night, the ocean was the only noise you heard: relaxing and cozy beyond belief.
In the early morning, I discover the window (ironically) gazes right out to a view of Castle Rock - just offshore from Arch Cape.
Morning also suggests a luscious, premium, home cooked meal prepared by Dau herself. Dau was a chemist in her previous life in Chicago, and joked that meal making should be an extension of that part of chemists that like to cook things. (Given this castle ambiance, I laugh to myself and picture her in a laboratory coat, babbling maniacally as she whips up a meal while lighting thunders all around).
사랑가득한밤 Guests sit together in the beautiful atrium-like dining-room, where they chat and get to understand each other. I sat with a young couple from Portland and another older couple from Michigan who have actually been regulars because the location started in 1995. In reality, they were among the first guests in its very first 2 weeks.
These various, memorable amenities, St. Bernard's deals present certificates. 광주안마 Dau also uses wedding plans that accommodate approximately 60 people and her signature, fascinating cooking.
Other irresistible aspects of this area consist of more secret beaches simply to the south and north. A couple of miles north, you'll discover the mesmerizing Hug Point, which is packed with intriguing and odd geologic formations like cool sea caves, a waterfall and various shapes and cracks in the cliffs. Its most intriguing landmark is a chunk of road blasted out of a basalt promontory - a residue of when the beaches were the only real highway the seaside region had, back around 1910. You can even see the leftovers of a traffic signal ingrained in the rock. In Cannon Beach, you'll discover a big selection of upscale dining establishments that are legendary, in addition to some Lewis & Clark landmarks.
St. Bernard's Bed & Breakfast is on East Ocean Rd., simply north of the Arch Cape Tunnel. www.st-bernards.com. 800-436-2848.
