Mac Demarco Pillows, The Pillow Queens and Royal Mountain Records
After self-releasing their 2020 debut In Waiting, Pillow Queens have signed to Canadian indie label Royal Mountain Records. They're about to drop Leave The Light on, their first album with Royal Mountain Records, whose previous releases include Alvvays and Mac DeMarco.


They were featured in Hot Press's cover story and they're currently touring all over the world.


Lead Singer/Guitarist


Mac Demarco is the guitarist and singer in the group Mac Demarco Pillows is not a stranger to the psychedelic and goofy songwriting production. The Canadian born musician has recorded six albums so far including Rock and Roll Night Club (2012) 2 (2012), Salad Days (2014), Another One (2015), This Old Dog (2017) and Here Comes the Cowboy (2019).


In his latest album Here Comes the Cowboy, Mac Demarco has reverted back to his aggressive self-deprecating and self-aggrandizing persona. The lyrics of his often reflect personal stories from his life however, he also finds humour in the most everyday situations.


This is a perfect example: 'What Mom Doesn't Know' is first single released by Here Comes the Cowboy. The song is a departure from the standard Mac $30 guitar sound and introduces a classic Japanese synthesizers.



The song's chorus is about a man who's been through many things and has "always been there to help me." It's a sentiment that makes you feel like it was written by someone who's been in the arena all of their lifeand has nothing but solidarity to show for it.


Bassist


Since 1989, DeMarco has been playing bass for The Pillows. He was enlisted to the band by Kenji Ueda who had left Kenzi & The Trips and created The Pillows.


After the release of their first single "Ame ni Utaeba" in 1991, the band began their first tour and began recording. Their debut album Moon Gold was released in June of 1992.


The band's popularity grew in the West following their participation in the TV show FLCL and led to their first western single, "Ride on Shooting Star" as well as subsequent US tours. The band has also released several greatest hit compilations Live DVDs, tribute albums.


In 2009 The Pillows issued a series of albums to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The series was called the "Late Bloomer Series". It included two live DVDs, Pied Piper go to Yesterday and Blue Song With Blue Poppies. Also included was an EP, Turn Back and the best-of compilation album Rock Stock & Too Smoking the Pillows as well as Once Upon a Time In the Pillows and Good Dreams.


Drummer


It's late October, and the doors of Mac Demarco Pillows' Brooklyn home studio are open. The 23-year old drummer's eyes are darkening , and his facial hair is wavy in the region between his real beard and five-o'clock shadow.


The drummer for Mac Demarco Pillows is Joe McMurray, who's been Mac's go-to man since Mac first released music under his own name in the year 2011. Mac and Mac first met in Vancouver when they both performed as part of Makeout Videotape on the local circuit.


They've been playing together for some time and with his relaxed personality along with his calm demeanor and ability to relax, McMurray is a perfect fit for the role of Mac Demarco Pillows' drummer. They are in the process of putting together their first album with Royal Mountain Records. You are able to catch them performing live in Canada and the UK, and Ireland this fall.
