A Castle on Oregon's Coast
Oregon's coastline is full of tricks: veiled surprises and enjoyments, clandestine, deserted beaches and hidden gems peppering the towns in the kind of lodgings or dining establishments.
아이러브밤 However possibly the most sensational secret on all of Oregon's coast lies just beyond the art and culture capital of Cannon Beach, on the north coast. There's a castle a bit south of town, concealed behind the walls of trees simply north of the Arch Cape Tunnel. You can end up being king and queen here, at this insanely romantic spot that smacks of something between the Bavarian castle that motivated Disneyland's signature structure and the Oregon ski lodge included in "The Shining."
St. Bernard's Bed & Breakfast is a elegant and impressive building peppered with creative information, containing 7 striking guestrooms filled with antiques, beautiful home furnishings and a sense of the Victorian fused with modern grace.
On one specific night in April, I come to St. Bernard's near 8:30 p.m., and it's pitch black. I've been here prior to a couple of times and seen littles it, however for the first time I park in back, identifying the charming strings of lights in the garden and on the walls, in addition to the two deer figures made of light bulbs. I stop to gawk and look at these, and at the archway going through the building, half anticipating to see a member of some royal family appear in a carriage and be ushered out by some servant.
Inside the enormous front door, owner Barbara Dau invites me in and up the snaking, stone staircase into the living-room. Here, chandeliers and stylish furnishings live in the location, with a cool little rounded nook in one corner - certainly part of the "tower." In the early evenings, Barbara hosts "social hours" for the guests here, featuring white wine and camaraderie in front of the fireplace.
I arrive too late for this, of course, however Barbara tells me these can in some cases be dynamic and fun-packed, while at other times none of the guests appear at all. It's a no-pressure event, and with extraordinary beaches simply a block away - who can blame them? Just across the street are the beautiful, immaculate sands of Arch Cape, a small unincorporated community which includes one shop and a smattering of homes. In front of it sits a gorgeous stretch of beach that runs for miles to the north, while right away to the south hovers a craggy basalt cliff, where access to a odd and wild rocky cove is sometimes given by low tides.
The rooms at St. Bernard's Bed & Breakfast are jaw dropping - at least. The "Ginger" ($179) features blue and white fabrics, oriental ginger jars and a love seat, with a king size bed from Austria. In "Gaugin" ($169) there's a cozy window seat, a funky bath tub, muted pastels of a queen and the artist size bed. The spectacular "Heather" ($189) is on the top flooring and includes a personal deck, vaulted ceilings and a sitting area with a love seat. The "Parisian" ($149) comes with calming, hand painted flower wallpaper, a window seat, a wingback chair, and has a Victorian vibe. The beautiful "Tower" is in the tower and it's huge ($209), with a sitting area, big soaking tub, various antiques, and it's draped in dreamy white lace. The "Provence" ($209) is on the garden level and is sequestered far from the rest of this little palace, with terra-cotta floors, Jacuzzi and French doors opening into a private patio area.
My space was the "Tapestry" ($209), with an extraordinary economy size bed, engaging tapestries on the wall and flooring, a big French armoire, and huge soaking tub that shouts honeymoon hangout. There's a curious little reading nook with a stained glass ceiling, and the television comes enclosed in a charming replica of a castle.
At night, the ocean was the only noise you heard: cozy and soothing beyond belief.
광주업소 In the early morning, I notice the window (ironically) gazes right out to a view of Castle Rock - just offshore from Arch Cape.
Early morning likewise implies a luscious, gourmet, home prepared meal prepared by Dau herself. Dau was a chemist in her previous life in Chicago, and joked that meal making must be an extension of that part of chemists that like to cook things. (Given this castle ambiance, I laugh to myself and imagine her in a laboratory coat, babbling maniacally as she whips up a dish while lighting thunders all around).
아이러브밤 Guests sit together in the beautiful atrium-like dining-room, where they talk and get to understand each other. I sat with a young couple from Portland and another older couple from Michigan who have actually been regulars given that the location started in 1995. They were among the very first guests in its very first 2 weeks.
These many, unforgettable amenities, St. Bernard's deals present certificates. Dau likewise offers wedding packages that accommodate up to 60 individuals and her signature, fascinating cooking.
Other tempting aspects of this area consist of more secret beaches just to the south and north. Its most interesting landmark is a portion of roadway blasted out of a basalt promontory - a remnant of when the beaches were the only genuine highway the seaside region had, back around 1910.
St. Bernard's Bed & Breakfast is on East Ocean Rd., simply north of the Arch Cape Tunnel. www.st-bernards.com. 800-436-2848.
