Is it Really Necessary to have all that?

Media

I've already mentioned how pictures can occupy a lot of space, but as long as the pictures serve a specific function in relation to the main content of the page, and do not occupy excessive amounts of data they are acceptable. However, what isn't often excused in web pages that contain text are videos. I hate it when I click on an interesting headline on a news website and then am directed to a short article, accompanied by a two minute video of their morning show. I'm not likely to watch the clip so why would be consuming my bandwidth? But an argument can be made for this type of situation however there is no reason to doubt that websites contain some kind of video playing for no reason.

I'm sure that we've been on websites that had a spinning globe or some other high-definition picture at the top. We may have glanced at it for a moment and thought, "Hey, that looks cool." But then we went down to find the information we were looking for. We didn't go to the site to see the background, but rather to browse the information on the website. Why is it that the background of a site take up exponentially more data than the content we're actually looking at? If the web page was not designed well it is possible that your browser is continuously downloading the same 6 second video. Ceglowski suggested that if a web page looks good with pictures of President William Howard Taft rather than whatever other pictures or videos the designers would like to include, then they should include images of Taft instead.

Tablet Accessibility

I am not a fan of tablets. I don't use them in the same way that others do. So I won’t spend a lot of time with them. But tablets are great for certain people. When iPads were introduced to the market, websites began to evolve initially simple and unimportant buttons were expanded and styled and, of course, the most elegant ones are the ones you press least often. I'm thankful that I'm not a web-designer since designing websites that work well on all kinds of hardware is not fun.

To date, I've only mentioned things which are in the hands of the developer but once a webpage lets ads on it then there's no way for a developer to determine if the page they've spent hours creating and optimizing looks great and perform well. A 3MB page could be loaded with a 50 MB advertisement.

Ceglowski shared this graph, based on the 2015 US cost per bybyte of internet bandwidth. It shows the amount it costs to pull up advertisements on various websites compared to the actual content. It is clear that ads don't only cost us our time and protection from computer viruses, but also the mere act of showing advertisements costs us money in the form of internet bandwidth. Another reason to utilize an ad blocking software is YouTube.

I could go endlessly about ads, but I'm sure you'll all. So I won't bore your eyes with it.

Two paths

After his presentation, Ceglowski presented two video game screenshots.

Minecraft is an extremely basic game, but it's not a very pretty game, but it's an endlessly creative platform.

Call of Duty games are always being diveloped to provide the best graphics and increasingly compelling gameplay, but they take much more resources to run, and at the end of the day they don't do much to distinguish themselves from other games in their genre.

We want the internet to be more similar to Minecraft. We want to see cool and original things done using less resources, not the same kind of thing we're used to seeing done with more.

So what should I learn

While I'm sure this won't have a huge impact on the future of the internet and neither will anyone else. We will continue to be compelled to use bloated websites but we must also look at ways to reduce the amount of bloat in other aspects of our lives. Is it worth spending the extra $500 on a car that has a backup camera? No, you're safer atually turning around to back up anyways. Is it worth paying $1.25 more to make a guacamole slurp in your burrito? You could get a whole avacado for less than the price. Is TV worth your time? You could be doing more productive things with your time.
