A new version of Minecraft developed for the classroom is now available for early access. Minecraftserverlist Minecraft Education Edition was launched in January, as part of Microsoft's acquisition of MinecraftEdu which is a team which has been developing the game for teachers. The replacement will be available for free in the summer months, and will be available before the pricing model per student will be introduced for the academic year. As a token of appreciation, Microsoft has promised existing MinecraftEdu customers a year of free access to Education Edition -- presumably that will kick in once the early access trial closes.
Education Edition has several advantages over the default version of Minecraft. Students can learn together in one world. This eliminates the necessity of private servers through services like Minecraft Realms. Teachers can create non-player characters (NPCs) to create an easier experience and provide them with web-based links to allow students access additional resources. Also, there's a chalkboard for displaying instructions and an camera that students can use to take pictures of their work and create an in-game portfolio as they go along.
Microsoft claims that it is working on other features requested by the community. The new interface offers teachers an interactive map with markers for each student and the ability to teleport users (should someone wander off or get lost), and a chat window to manage class-wide and private conversations. Minecraft has proven itself to be a useful education tool for teaching art, geology and coding. With an official version for school, its potential and successes are almost certain to grow.
