Minecraft will Join Microsoft

Mojang's team is joining Microsoft Studios, which includes the studios behind global blockbuster franchises such as "Halo," "Forza," "Fable" and more. Microsoft's investments in mobile and cloud technologies will enable "Minecraft" players to enjoy richer and faster worlds, more powerful development tools, and even more opportunities to connect across the "Minecraft" community.



Microsoft will acquire Mojang under the terms of the agreement for $2.5 billion.



Mojang:



Minecraft has grown from a basic game to an enormously important project. While we're extremely happy with the progress Minecraft has grown into, it was never Notch's idea to see it grow this big.



As you've probably heard, Notch is the creator of Minecraft and is the majority shareholder at Mojang. He has decided that he would not want to take on the responsibility of running a business that has such a global impact. In the last few years, he's tried to develop smaller projects, but the pressure of running Minecraft was too much for him to handle. The only alternative was to sell Mojang. However, he'll continue to make amazing things. Don't be worried about it.



There are only a handful of potential buyers with the funds to expand Minecraft to the size it deserves. Since 2012, we have worked closely with Microsoft and were impressed by their commitment to the development of our game. We're sure that Minecraft will continue to grow in an awesome way.



Markus "Notch" Persson:



I don't see myself as a true game developer. I make games because it's fun, and because I love games and I enjoy programming, but I don't make games with the intention of them becoming massive hits and I don't set out to make a difference in the world. Minecraft certainly became a massive success and people are telling me that it has changed games. It didn't happen on accident. It's certainly pleasing, and to gradually get put in the public spotlight is interesting.



I'm not sure what to think of this.

Minecraft is the most mind-blowing game I've played. It's a blend of sandbox and exploration, world-building and role-playing. Although it has an "conclusion" that you will need to discover on your own, it doesn't end. You can play on your own or with other players and even manage your own Minecraft server and invite just your friends to play on it. It's all too easy to spend thousands of hours in Minecraft and millions of people already have.

It seems obvious to me. Microsoft has decided that if Apple adopts hi-res technology in their retina screens or operating system, Microsoft cannot differentiate itself. Instead they will "bet the entire company on red" and switch to low-res.

Minecraft is the biggest thing that happened to games since Pokemon. Everyone plays the game and when Minecraft is well managed it could be one of the most important, widely played, influential franchises for at least another decade.



Microsoft considers games to be extremely significant, both because they're a major driver for new Windows PCs and Windows licenses, as well as because of the Xbox. Minecraft Servers Microsoft has attempted to develop games that were a bit like Minecraft in the past (Viva Pinata, Kodu, Project Spark) and have generally been unsuccessful.



Sony already owns Little Pig Planet, and Nintendo is now entering the "creative games that allow you to make stuff rather than just consume stuff" field with Mario Maker. They're right I believe.
