The British Museum in London - complete with all of its exhibits - will be recreated in the video game Minecraft.



This project is part of the Museum of the Future program that aims to increase the institution's appeal.



Many real-life organizations have created maps in Minecraft, including Ordnance Survey, the Danish government, and Ordnance Survey. They want to make young people aware of their work.



This week, Minecraft was purchased by Microsoft for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

A spokesperson for the museum stressed that the project was in "an initial stage of planning", and the "build" was not yet started.



She added that the organisation is planning to recruit people from the public to help in the "construction".

The natural history collection was relocated to South Kensington in 1880s, where it would become the Natural History Museum.

One employee of the British Museum posted details about the project on Reddit and solicited volunteers.



He received enthusiastic feedback from Minecraft fans all over the across the globe.



Initial stages



The initial step will be to digitally design the Great Court and facade of the building.



The institution hopes that this stage will be in place at the time of the public debate on changing public dialogues around museums in the digital age. It will take place on October 16th.



Ed Barton, who researches gaming for the analytics firm Ovum Ed Barton, who is the head of Ovum's gaming research department, BBC the move of the British Museum to Minecraft will allow it to be "perceived as something enjoyable" and could serve as a useful educational tool for the younger demographic.



"It's the digital equivalent of building the British Museum in Lego," he declared. "You have to build it brick by brick".



The institution was to be commended for crowdsourcing the project "as it transforms it into a collaborative thing" and will further inspire young Minecraft gamers.



He added, "What an awesome project it would be to be to build the Elgin Marbles from Minecraft."
