During his time there he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with a celebration of servicemen and he additionally participated within the Comrades Marathon in 1933 gaining a silver medal. New Zealand Shipping Corporation kept me employed within the offshore and Pacific Islands / Australia / New Zealand container runs until the corporate was sold in 1989. Swire Pacific Offshore employed me as DPO for one 12 months on their dsv’s working in SE Asian/ Borneo waters. Later moved back to New Zealand for local short time period offshore work in NZ on seismic / platform supply / container vessels as Chief Officer until Oct 1995. It was time to begin work ashore, so resigned from South Pacific Shipping to work at Napier Port Ltd as tug master / trainee pilot. Pilotage was not for me so I took on the position as Napier Harbour Master until 2010.
Nov 1946 to Dec 1955 employed by S.A. Railways & Harbours on Harbour maintenance, electrical, cranes, winches, capstans, pre-cooling plant, lighthouses and harbour craft. Dec 1955 to Dec 1959 sailed with Ellerman Lines as Electrical Engineer Officer. Then a brief spell with RN Thomson as Technical Representative. June 1959 to Sept 1976 self employed operarting an electrical wholesale business. 1977 moved to Papua New Guinea and worked for TDE Electrical.
He returned to his pre-war occupation as barman, now on the Western Province Sports Club, Kelvin Grove, Newlands and to his residence along with his wife at 87 Roodebloem Road, Woodstock, Cape Town. For some months, Carnarvon Castle was idle in Cape Town present process repairs – then she was off once more, Withers nonetheless a member of her crew, to renew her patrol duties within the Atlantic. 13 July 1943, when he was drafted back to HMS Afrikander. Carnarvon Castle sailed off to finish the war as a troopship ferrying service personnel and civilians between New York and Britain. Finished off sea time for Chief Officers Certificate within the S.A. Sugela with Ernie Hinterlietner because the Captain, a very pleased ship. Completed Chief Officers Certificate in 1975 and then did a brief stint as Chief Officer on the Zwartkops with Unicorn to fill in some spare time and earn some additional money earlier than getting married. After completing his apprenticeship, served in varied ships throughout WWII.
