The relevance of the Carling Cup is being called into question yet again, with four Premier League sides going out of the tournament on Tuesday night, including the three clubs most recently promoted to the top flight.
Comments made by Queens Park Rangers manager Neil Warnock and Wolves boss Mick McCarthy indicate that progressing or being knocked out of the competition is irrelevant to their season, as they focus on the Premier League to the exclusion of all other competitions.
Following the example set by Arsenal and Manchester United in the previous decade, it is now commonplace for Premier League sides to field weakened sides in the early stages of the tournament - Rochdale, Shrewsbury and MK Dons enjoyed victories against QPR, Swansea and Norwich's fringe players.
