Lego Takes on Minecraft With Video Game

Lego is taking on Minecraft with a video game

Danish toy company Lego has launched a rival to popular video game Minecraft.



Lego Worlds is now available for purchase at PS11.99 via the Steam gaming platform. Its final release, featuring classic and contemporary playsets as well as well-known mini-figures, is scheduled in 2016.



Players' feedback will be used to improve features.



Lego already sells Minecraft playsets so gamers can physically create their own virtual creations. And Lego Worlds will invite fans to do the same in reverse.



Tom Stone, managing director of TT Games, which will launch Lego Worlds, said it "embodies the physical, Lego brick-building fun that consumers have enjoyed for decades, on a digital platform that delivers an entirely new experience using the beloved bricks".



He said, "From the brick-by–brick editor, to discovering an extensive selection of items, characters and creatures to populate your worlds, there are endless possibilities for creativity."



Favorite toy



Daniel Goldberg, who wrote a book on the growth of Minecraft said that he was "surprised" that it took so long.



"Minecraft is exactly what Lego should have done 10 years ago," he said.



"I'm certain it will be a huge hit for them."



Markus Persson, the Swedish video game creator who created Minecraft has made no secret of his enthusiasm for Lego and the admiration seems to be reciprocal.



Speaking last year, David Gram, Lego's marketing director, said "Minecraft is digital Lego. It's an excellent idea however, we would have liked to had invent it.



Mr. Goldberg believes that Mr. Persson, also known as Notch will be "flattered by the game."



"Lego was his favorite toy as a kid and was the primary inspiration behind Minecraft So it's great to see things come full circle," he said.



"I do not believe there will be animosity. Game developers generally are generally happy when someone copies their game."



Lego is not only designed for children, but also adult collectors.



Microsoft bought Minecraft in the year 2000. It has been a huge hit with both children and adults.



"The game's audience, as well as Minecraft, has proved itself to be quite large so I'm confident there will be room for both games," said Mr Goldberg.
