Dren McDonald is a composer who pays tribute to Galaga and Sonic the Hedgehog in The String Arcade. This album includes music from video games that has been composed for string quartet.
The String Arcade was funded through an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign. It contains 15 original arrangements of classic themes from gaming performed and funded by Bay Area musicians and Boston's Videri String Quartet. The games featured include Altered Beast, Ecco the Dolphin, Monkey Island 2, FTL: Faster Than Light and Minecraft. A preview track taken from PopCap's Plants vs. Zombies is available for download and streaming on this page.

ALAMEDA, Calif. - January 28, 2014 In August, Bay Area composer Dren McDonald led an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign for The String Arcade, the recording of video game music that has been reimagined for string quartet. The final recording was released to backers this month and is now available for pre-order to the general public from iTunes and BandCamp (see below for details). The String Arcade will be available as a digital download and on CD on the 11th of February.

The String Arcade is a meticulously curated collection of music composed for string quartet by Dren McDonald (Ghost Recon Commander, Ravenwood Fair) and Jason Poss (Lord of the Rings film trilogy, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King). The arrangements go beyond chamber music emulations. Each piece is transformed, embellished, and reimagined in order to convey the emotions that are evoked through the games. When he was conceiving the project, McDonald was inspired by John Lurie's Stranger Than Paradise film soundtrack (1984), which included a moody string quartet composition.
The String Arcade will provide gamers an opportunity to experience new ways of playing classics. It is also a great opportunity to inspire young musicians to acquire a violin, cello, or viola. Several tracks were specifically chosen from games popular among kids, and all album proceeds will be donated to the Alameda Music Project (http://www.alamedamusicproject.org), a tuition-free K-5 after-school program launching in September.
