Krebs Pinpoints the Possible Author of the Mirai Botnet

The fall of 2017 was a difficult time for Mirai. It first hijacked numerous IoT devices to launch an enormous Distributed Denial-Of-Service attack (DDoS) on KrebsOnSecurity's website in September. Then, it took off a significant portion of the internet just a few months later. But who is the person responsible for the attack? Brian Krebs, security researcher was determined to discover the source of the malware after his website was down. He discovered several sources and evidence that point to Paras Jha (a Rutgers University student who is also the owner of DDoS security provider Protraf Solutions).



A week after the attack on the security website the person who initiated the attack, claiming to be Anna Senpai's name, released the source code of the Mirai botnet, which led to other copycat assaults. It also gave Krebs with the first clue in their long journey to discover Anna Senpai's true identity. Krebs created a glossary of terms and names with cross-references as well as a partial relational map.



The full story is admittedly long, clocking in at over 8000 words, but worth the time to learn how botnet wranglers earn money by deploying zombie devices on unsuspecting targets. The sources who pointed Krebs to Anna Senpai's identity were involved in the use of botnets for the benefit of shadowy clients, unleashing them on security firms that protect lucrative Minecraft servers that host thousands of players. When their online gaming is hindered -- say the result of repeated and irritating DDoS attacks players leave servers, thereby giving them a reason to move to whichever security provider can provide protection...in this case, the security providers who arranged for the botnet attacks in the first place.



According to Krebs the source the site's security was entangled in the botnet war when it leaked information in the early September that led to the arrest of two hackers behind the Israeli "vDos" attack service. Anna Senpai was believed to have been paid to unleash Mirai on the KrebsOnSecurity site by vengeful clients who'd used the now-defunct vDos, cementing the security firm's interest.
