Families who Game together Stay Together

My dad enjoys hunting, fishing and fighting fires. I enjoy reading, philosophy and not putting myself through too much. Although we may not have a lot in common, we do play lots of games together. "I try to show them that this is what you have to do when building a computer to ensure that they can do things on their own," Steven said. "I tried to make them as independent as is possible."



Of course, having things you enjoy doing at home doesn't always guarantee the best family time. Sometimes life gets in the way and you'll need a break to spend time together. Where do you go when your family is already exploring magical kingdoms (albeit virtual)?



Steven's family opted for QuakeCon because it's held in their state. Marketed as the world's largest free LAN event, the Bethesda hosted convention draws thousands of people to Dallas. Steven stated, "It helps us focus on working together." It's very enjoyable to go out and look around at what people are doing and what new things are being released. It's something we all love doing and it's not too expensive.



They don't make the trek on their own. Similar to how families camp with their friends, QuakeCon tends to be an activity for the whole family. Steven and his daughters attended with friends and Nicole's best friend Sean and his family. Steven said, "His dad is a good friend, and we have become good friends." "I would invite him and Sean to our home to host mini LAN parties in our house and I would invite three or four friends and my daughters would also join in, and we'd have a great time at the house." QuakeCon has been a great event to spend time with my daughters over the past few years.



"I don't know if it was the family sitting down at dinner saying, "We ought to go to the park!'" Sean 17-year-old Sean told me. While his mother, father and brother, 7 years old, Reid were away, Sean was still playing in the Bring Your Own Computer area of QuakeCon. "It was just my father and I saying, 'This is kick A' and the other two kinda got dragged along. We're all friends with Steven's family , and we all play together, so they suggested we all join together.



For these people who want to book a hotel for a weekend of video games seems like one of the most natural things in the world. It should be. Anyone who is younger than 18 today was born into a world in which video games are a regular activity for millions. Steven's oldest daughter is going to college close to home Steven hopes that QuakeCon, at least, can be an annual excuse for the entire family to gather and play games over the weekend, regardless of when the girls grow older and move out.
