Mantra ini termasuk dalam jenis charm spell. Gerakannya sederhana, hanya mengayunkan wand secara vertikal. Warna sinarnya adalah biru transparan (nyaris putih). Seperti judulnya, mantra ini memiliki efek sebagai mantra perlindungan yang akan menghalau segala jenis serangan mantra dan juga benda-benda fisik yang dilemparkan ke arah kita. Hanya ada satu mantra yang tidak bisa dihalau oleh Protego yaitu Avada Kedavra. Mantra perlindungan ini terlihat simpel, tapi sebenarnya ini termasuk mantra rumit. Bahkan tidak semua auror di ministry bisa menghasilkan mantra protego yang sempurna. Mantra protego ini ada 4 jenis yaitu Protego Duo, Protego Totallum, Protego Horribilis, dan Protego Maxima.
1. Protego Duo
Protego duo adalah versi lebih kuat dari protego, tapi sama dengan protego, saudaranya ini tidak melindungi secara ‘area’, artinya hanya melindungi pemantranya saja.
- Pelafalan: "pro-TAY-go DOO-oh"
- Jenis: Charm
- Gerakan wand: mengibaskan wand membentuk gerakan agak vertikal
- Warna: semi transparan
2. Protego Totallum
Protego totallum ini fungsinya bukan hanya melindungi pemantra, tapi juga mencakup area kecil di sekeliling pemantra, tapi dalam jangka waktu yang pendek. Cara pengucapan mantra ini perlu diulang-ulang tergantung luas area yg ingin dilindungi.
- Pelafalan: "pro-TAY-goh TOH-tuh-luhm"
- Jenis: Charm
- Gerakan wand: sama seperti protego duo
- Warna: transparan
3. Protego Horribilis
Protego horribilis bisa melindungi cakupan area yang lebih luas. Semua jenis Dark Magic yang menyerang akan dipantulkan. Ini merupakan mantra yg bagus, namun cukup rumit juga.
- Pelafalan: "proh-TAY-goh hor-i-BIL-luhs"
- Jenis: Charm
- Gerakan wand: diacungkan ke udara
- Warna: putih nyaris transparan
4. Protego Maxima
Jika menggabungkan Protego Maxima dengan mantra ‘Fianto Duri’ and ‘Repello Inimicum’, maka akan membentuk magic barrier yang kuat sekali, saking kuatnya apapun benda yang melewati batas barrier akan ‘disintegrated’ atau hancur.

- Jenis: Charm
- Gerakan wand: diacungkan ke arah langit
- Warna: kebiruan
