The developer Mojang today announced that Minecraft has sold 100 million copies across all platforms, including PCs, Macs consoles, mobile devices, and consoles. Around 53,000 copies of the game have been sold every day since its inception. The game has kept people interested as well -- more than 40 million people boot up a Minecraft world every month and tinker around with a blocky shovel, axe and sword. Other than Tetris, very few games have even come close to the 100 million mark.
Much of that success is due to the game's open structure and unlimited potential. As long as the outward-facing geometry of the game is made up of simple, colorful blocks, players can design anything they want. The emphasis on imagination is the reason why many players, young and old are attracted by the game and continue to play years after the game's release. Mojang has offered constant updates to the game, introducing new mechanics, creatures and materials. The game's flexibility has also been a hit in the classroom, teaching the subjects of geology, art programming, and many other subjects.
When Microsoft acquired Mojang about two years ago, people were wondering what it had planned for the game. Do you think there will be a sequel? A kind of exclusiveness to Xbox, PC and Windows Phone?
