Senate Hearing on Children's Safety.S

The dystopian South Korean horror series "Squid Game" has become Netflix's most watched TV series however, it is fast becoming as controversial as it is popular.

The latest controversy that has erupted in relation to "Squid Game" which is rated TV-MA in the United States, relates to the interest it has sparked in children. A school in the Australian school warned that children aged 6 and under are playing the same games as in the hit show's violent and dark episodes. In Australia similar warnings have been issued by educators in Sydney and Western Australia.

The "Squid Game" features characters competing for cash prizes, participating in challenges that enhance the classic Korean children's games. The "losers," however, are killed at the end every round. These games, which emphasise the show's bizarre take on child's playing, are held in highly stylized arenas such as a large-sized playground for children. These traditional play areas for children are often with bloody stains and littered by corpses after each game. Game2hub The show is certainly a craze within children's digital worldviews.

YouTube Kids has many popular channels that profit from the "Squid Game” trend. These channels are geared towards viewers who are younger than 12. The content on YouTube includes How to Draw "Squid Game" character videos, as well as "Squid Game" gameplay videos that are themed to the online video game Roblox.

The Roblox game "Squid Game" which is a well-loved theme has been very popular. Many Roblox videos that feature "Squid Game" have hundreds of thousands or more views.

On both the kids' and main version of YouTube videos that are targeted at children showcase people (often children) playing these "Squid Game" inspired games in Roblox and Minecraft, with the "Red Light, Green Light" challenge being a popular trend. This challenge is also a trend on TikTok and users are playing the game in a vast range of real-life settings and in videogames Roblox and Minecraft.

The "Red Light, Green Light" scene has become one of "Squid Game's" most widely shared moments: The gigantic animatronic doll acting as a dangerous motion sensor in this game has been heavily popularized. The doll is often featured in thumbnails of videos for "Squid Game"-related children's YouTube content.

Most of these kids' YouTube videos are pretty harmless by themselves. But, they illustrate how "Squid Game" has gotten into digital content specifically aimed at young children. However the lines between adult-oriented and child-oriented content online were always blurred.

YouTube has been at the heart of numerous controversies concerning inappropriate content targeted at children. TikTok has also been the subject of similar concerns about children's safety and inappropriate content being seen by children. TikTok gives full access to the app to children older than 13, but reports show children much younger are using it: Like YouTube, TikTok is currently facing a U.S. Senate hearing on children's safety.S. Federal Trade Commission, in 2019, made significant changes to clarify the distinction between children's and adult content on the platform. YouTube now requires creators to inform YouTube that their content is intended for children. Machine learning is used to determine videos that have an identifiable target audience.

YouTube is a different platform than broadcast television. YouTube's content is very popular with children , and is often different from the children's television.

Children's YouTube content that riffs off "Squid Game" characters and scenes continues a long-running trend of "mashup" content for children on the platform.

Similar to "Squid Game" content "mashups" videos make use of popular themes such as search terms, themes, and characters, often featuring famous characters in thumbnail imagery or video titles.

The growing global concern over children's participation in "Squid Game" challenges is reminiscent of the "Momo" phenomenon of 2018 and in 2019. In this instance the image of a sinister figure that became associated with the moniker "Momo" was a viral image on the internet (the photo was actually of a Japanese sculpture).

International news media reported on "Momo" and claimed that the creature appeared in children's videos on YouTube. It also urged youngsters to play dangerous games and challenges.

As is currently happening with regard to "Squid Game," official warnings were sent to parents about the "Momo Challenge," advising them to be vigilant. It was quickly discovered that the "Momo Challenge" is an internet-wide hoax, was probably a prank.

Momo was an emblem of parents' most feared fears about the use of internet by children. The fear of "Squid Game"'s influence on children has a similar tone. These fears may not be a response to actual dangers, but rather a manifestation our discomfort with the ease with which adult-oriented media can seep in to online content aimed at young kids.

The unruly tentacles that make up "Squid Game's" inter-generational appeal illustrate how streaming media challenges the existing conceptions of "child-appropriate" content.

Adult concerns about "Squid Game"'s harmful influence on children are rooted in earlier concerns about this "mashup" as well as about children's interactions with the internet more generally.
