How to Get Minecraft Capes

Previously exclusive to Minecon attendees, you can now get your very personal Minecraft capes. Find out how to obtain them in both Minecraft Java and Bedrock

How do you get hold of Minecraft capes, you are asking? You may have heard rumours about the mythical piece of cloth that adorns the shoulders of the top Minecraft players. The legends speak of myriad Minecraft capes handed out to the fortunate few over the years. The latest news (sigh) is that capes alter the appearance of Minecraft Elytra, the magical wings found in the end of ships, since they take up the same space on the player's back. Naturally, Minecraft capes are highly coveted however they're not easy to get.

Those who ventured to any Minecon event prior to Minecon Earth 2017 each received Minecraft capes; each year, there was a new color and design. The most unusual are the personal caps that were given to lucky individuals to honor their achievements, such as Reddit user u/billyk_, who received a personalized turtle cape for recommending that Mojang should include turtles in Minecraft.

If you're unable to come up with a suggestion as good as turtles (unlikely) or can time travel back to Minecons past the time, you're not going to obtain any of these Minecraft capes in the Java version. They're a bit more common in the Bedrock version, since some skin packs on the Marketplace include them. If you'd like to have them free, you can test on a cape with the assistance of Minecraft mods, but it will only be visible to you. There is one currently available Minecraft cape for the Java edition, however you'll need to read this article for more information on how to obtain it.

Get a Minecraft cape by transferring your account to Minecraft.

In a blog post in 2020, Mojang announced that it will be migrating all Minecraft Java edition accounts from Mojang to Microsoft. This is a mandatory change, so if you don't switch your account to Microsoft at the time it is due and you don't get it, you'll be able to play Minecraft unless you use the launcher.

On the bright side, after you sign into Minecraft with your Microsoft account, you'll gain access to a shiny new cape - and maybe more as Mojang promises players 'more than one outfit to showcase'. New Minecraft accounts are automatically set up using Microsoft instead of Mojang.

This official Mojang blog post explains how to do it.

How do I activate Minecraft capes

If you have an official Minecraft cape, you can equip it prior to launching the game. However, your capes Bedrock caps are exclusive to that version. The same applies to any capes that you can earn in Minecraft Java version.

Start the app, and click the button to access the Dressing Room from your main menu. Next, click on the tab on the left of the screen with a red cape with the Mojang logo. This will show all the capes available So, pick one and click equip.

To play the Java version, you'll must open the Launcher and then click Minecraft: Java Edition on the tabs to the left. You will be presented with a range of options which include Skins. MINECRAFT SERVER LIST To view all your skins, simply click this link. From here, you can create your own skin or edit an existing one. You can view all of your available caps by clicking on the option to choose Skin File.

Get a cape with Minecraft mods

What if your avatar needs a cape and you don't want to pay for the cape that is free to migrate? Luckily, with the power of mods, you can create your own cape that will ring in your direction as you walk! Mods such as the Advanced Capes Mod make it possible to get the most sought-after capes available in the game or any cape you can think of.

There is a caveat that other players who you meet on multiplayer Minecraft servers aren't able to see your cape unless they have the same mods installed. Waiting for official Mojang capes to be given to you when your account migrates is the best way to make sure everyone can see your capes.

That's all you should know about getting yourself an awesome Minecraft cape If you're looking to complete your ensemble, here are the best Minecraft skins we've found, or you could kit yourself out with a full outfit of Minecraft Netherite armour. Take a look at our Minecraft The Wild guide for everything about the most recent 1.19 update.
