SS Ourang Medan gemisinden gönderilen acil mesajlarda yardım istenmesiyle başlayan ve "Kaptan dahil tüm mürettebatımız öldü" denilen mesajın hemen ardından "ölüyorum !.." diye ikinci mesaj radyoyla gönderilmiştir. Mesajı alan gemilerden Silver Star hemen koordinatları tespit edip Ourang Medan’ın yanına gitmiş ancak gemide bir tane köpek de dahil olmak üzere sadece cesetlerle karşılaşmıştır. Mesajları gönderen tayfa da haberleşme odasında ölü bulunmuştur.
SS Ourang Medan olayını tuhaf yapan şey ise, tüm cesetler elleriyle işaret ederek güneşe baktıklarının belirtilmesidir. Ağızları sonuna kadar açılmış, suratlarında korku ifadesi ve dişlerini sıkmış bir şekilde duran ölüler. Diğer bir ilginçlik ise, ölenlerin vücutlarında darbe veya yaralanma belirtisinin görülmemiş olmasıdır.
