Making Minecraft and Mods on Steam Deck is Simple and Easy

Are you looking to get Minecraft working on Steam Deck or a regular Linux desktop without much fuss? Here's how you can accomplish this and it makes it easy. For this I picked the PolyMC launcher (a variant of MultiMC) available on Flathub, as the current official Minecraft launcher Flatpak does not save your password on Steam Deck and PolyMC of course deals with modding too.

Below is a video tutorial with text-based steps.

This video is also available on the Steam Deck section in the PolyMC Wiki!

Text steps:

- Install PolyMC from the Discover Software Centre on Steam Deck or Flathub directly for desktop Linux. - Launch PolyMC and then add your account to the top right corner. It is compatible with Mojang and Microsoft logins. Deep space ii Start by opening the main PolyMC Settings and click Minecraft in the left pane. Click the option to close PolyMC once the game window is opened. If you do not, the Steam Deck will blink between the two windows when you load in Game Mode/ Deck UI. Make sure in the PolyMC Settings that Java is updated to the latest version, which is necessary for the latest version of Minecraft. Click on Add Instance in the top left. Then, select normal Minecraft or mods with built-in search. It will install everything you need. To launch Steam directly, visit the Games menu at the top and click Add a Non-Steam Game. Then find PolyMC in that list.

Some YouTube comments suggested trying some optimized modpacks however I couldn't see a big enough difference in terms of performance or power consumption to justify it on Deck compared with vanilla Minecraft when testing on the same map seed. Mods for controllers were also suggested, but they're rarely updated and often only work with specific Minecraft versions so sticking with Steam Input and just adjusting some keys is the best solution for that. Update How to access Steam Deck or Gamepad controls in Minecraft.
