How to locate Diamonds in Minecraft 1.19

To find Diamonds in Minecraft 1.19, you need to go below 15 Y. This is the place where you will increase the chances of finding Diamonds.

Minecraft 1.18 introduced a number of important changes to Minecraft's world generation. If you're playing Minecraft 1.18 or later, you can go down below Y=0 and into negative figures. Below Y=0 you'll find all the usual ores, including Diamonds, embedded in Deepslate blocks instead of the normal Stone blocks.

See the below graph of distributions of ore for more details on where you can find the highest concentration of Diamonds and other resources:

Diamond begins to form at Y=15 and increases linearly in frequency the further down you go. To find out what Y-Level your on, press F3 to display the coordinates display. The current level of your lower half is shown by the second number after "XYZ".

If you find that a Diamond is going to be placed near an open-air building during the world generation process, it may not produce. This makes it harder to find diamonds in caves. You'll have to spend some time digging through the earth to increase the chances of finding them.

Summary: To quickly find diamonds, dig as low as possible until you get to bedrock. Then, start strip-mining!

How to find Diamonds in Minecraft 1.17 and earlier

If you're playing Minecraft 1.17 or earlier, you can find Diamond Ore in every Overworld biome from the Y-levels 1-15. They usually appear between levels 5-12, so if you want to maximise your chances of finding Diamonds keep your distance between these two levels.

No matter what version of Minecraft you're playing on, Diamonds will spawn in small veins that can be up to 9 blocks at a time. However, sometimes you'll find larger veins that are made up of multiple veins touching each other. Even at the appropriate levels, Diamonds are pretty rare.

Best method for mining Diamonds in Minecraft

Only an Iron Pickaxe is required to mine Diamond Ore. As of 1.18, Diamonds are far less common in open spaces like caves. This means that to maximise your chances of finding Diamonds in Minecraft you must strip-mine in straight lines in all directions.

The best method for mining Diamonds in Minecraft 1.19 is to dig down to level 57 and create two blocks high in any direction. Then start to mine out to either side of the tunnel in additional 2x1 tunnels, leaving a 2-block gap between each new tunnel.

Once you're satisfied you've strip-mined all Diamonds at this level, repeat the whole process until you reach level 53. If you go about digging this way at both level -57 and -53, then you'll be able to view all Diamonds that spawn between levels 58 and 51. This lets you get the most amount of Diamonds without crashing into blocks of Bedrock which could otherwise slow down your strip-mining progress.

If you're playing Minecraft 1.17 or earlier, you can use the exact same method using levels 6 and 10.

When mining, it's a good idea to keep an water Bucket with you, because pockets of lava are common at these levels. Be sure to carry plenty of torchlights to light your way and stop mobs from appearing in your tunnels. You could also use Night Vision potions to lighten your path, but this won't stop mobs spawning.
