Ground Water- water held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices in rock. Rain and snow-melt that infiltrate the ground. Soil and rock act as sponges, full of tiny pores and cracks that allow water in to infiltrate and collect underground.
Surface water- connected to groundwater, water wells intercept groundwater that may be on its way to springs that feed streams and rivers.
Water Cycle- processes when water circulates through earth's oceans, atmosphere, and land, involving precipitation as rain and snow, drainage in streams and rivers, and return to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration.
Foundation- bedrock, saturated zone- where the water comes down and can't hold any more, hence saturated. Line- water table,
Unsaturated zone- through which water moves downward towards the pore space which is not completely filled. Saturated zone- in which water collects and whose pore space is completely filled.
Water table- the plane of separation between these two zones.
Porosity- beds of rock, sediment, and regolith with high % of pore space
Aquifers- beds that hold large amounts of groundwater
Permeability- the ability of a solid to allow fluids to pass through. Just because pore space may not exist, doesn't mean that water can't flow through it.
Equilibrium- Water enters and leaves saturated zone.
Recharge- Process by which water enters, stream flows over rock fractures.
Influent stream- a stream that recharges ground water
Discharge- process by which water leaves
Effluent stream- A stream which picks up water from saturated zone.
