Sublime Shirt
Sublime was a band from Long Beach, California that released three albums and has sold over 17 million copies worldwide. The band was founded by Bradley Nowell, Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh.

After Nowell died of a drug overdose in 1996, the band broke up. However, they were able to reform in 2009 under the name Sublime with Rome.

For the next few years, Nowell and bassist Wilson recorded music that was influenced by rock, ska, funk and reggae. They released three studio albums and one live album.

Nowell died of a heroin overdose in 1996, and Sublime broke up soon after. The band has since reformed under the name Sublime With Rome, and their albums have sold millions of copies worldwide.

That iconic crying sun, tattooed across Nowell's back on the cover of their eponymous 1996 debut, has evolved into a cult of sorts. Merchandise based on the image is now ubiquitous, from T-shirts to shower curtains to wallets.

When Ortiz, the Sublime's tattoo artist, was a young man growing up in the Long Beach area, he was a fan of the band's music. He worked in a screenprinting shop and used his art skills to illustrate concert fliers, band shirts and spec album covers.

He became friends with Nowell and Wilson, and the two men began using his designs for their gigs and spec album covers. When the Sublime landed in Long Beach, they asked Ortiz to design the band's logo.

sublimeshirt became Nowell's go-to tattoo artist, providing the lettering that adorned the band's eponymous 1996 release. That image has become as ubiquitous as the name tattooed on Nowell's back and has become a symbol of Southern California beach culture.
