Minecraft Player's 35-hour Gaming Marathon

Minecraft player's 35-hour gaming marathon By Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

12 October 2015

A British man hopes to have broken the record of the world for the longest game played continuously in Minecraft.

Joe Kelly from Cheltenham played the game for 35 hours, 35 minutes and 35 seconds and raised over $1800 to fund cancer research.

The current record, 24 hours 10 minutes was set by Martin Fornleitner in Austria in 2011.

Minecraft is about creating structures out of blocks, exploring worlds , and taking part in battles.

The title has been sold for more than 54 million copies all over the world.

In the year 2000, Microsoft bought Mojang, the company behind it, for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

Mr. Kelly, who owns a film company and is a voice actor, has played the game since it was released in the year 2010. He usually plays only a few hours per week.

"Staying awake wasn't that bad I was able to complete the entire thing without any caffeine," he told the BBC.

"There were no stimulants other than sugar and stubbornness."

Mr. Kelly, who live streamed the entire game via YouTube, added that the incident had taken its toll on his hands.

"My shoulders and back didn't hurt, neither did my shoulders hurt. The worst thing was my fingers.

"They hurt so much just by holding a mouse and keyboard and clenching their fists for this long.

"Every small break I got, I was flexing the fingers."

Mr Kelly and his girlfriend, Sarah Vallance, are now working on providing evidence of the feat to the Guinness World Records.

He is not planning to stop playing the game.

"I introduced my girlfriend to Minecraft, we usually play together," he said.

"It's something we love doing together. I'm not averse to gaming."
