一般會在親人死亡後的七天內，選擇一天或三天舉行。 做七（做旬） 做七原本應是從親人死亡後算起，每七天一次，共舉行七次。 即頭七（第7天）、二七（第14天）、三七（第21天）、四七（第28天）、五七（第35天）、六七（第42天）及滿七（第49天）。 但現今實務上，除了頭七會在第七天（第六天晚上）舉行外，其餘都會縮短時日，並在出殯前一日完成滿七的儀式。 做七法會儀式有頭七至滿七。 許多喪家會選擇大七（即頭七、三七、五七和滿七）舉行，而小七（即二七、四七和六七）不做。
衣服可穿著亡者生前喜愛的衣服，毋須購買壽衣。 棺木 安置遺體 抬棺人員 外燴 搬抬棺木。 4名工作人員 靈車 載運棺柩至火化場或墓園。

但是也有部分改變並不是那麼正面，結果不僅造成喪葬禮儀意義的失焦，也是經濟上的浪費。 對於這些非正面性，或者是說負面性的、不必要的喪葬習俗，經常被提出應該革除的，有下列數種： 喪禮不必要的花費 項 目 說 明 備 註 電子琴花車 一輛裝飾俗豔華麗的花車，大聲播放歌曲。 或搭載一名打扮暴露的女子，高聲唱歌。
不過，無論喪禮是簡單肅穆，抑或是莊嚴隆重，有某些喪葬禮儀是必須要，或者是說很難省略者。 喪禮必要的花費 項 目 說 明 備 註 接體 當親人身故後，必須接運至殯儀館或住宅安置。 當然也有放在醫院附設的殯儀館者，但也須有接體人員協助搬運遺體。
