棺木的價格主要取決於木材的種類而非型式，臺灣檜木、臺灣肖楠及臺灣紅豆杉最為昂貴，大陸福杉、香杉次之，其他國外進口木材又次之。 價格昂貴的棺木要價100萬元以上（如王永慶的臺灣檜木棺，價格？萬元），一般的土葬棺木價格約30,000.~80,000.元，高級棺木約100,000.~300,000.元。 火化棺木火化棺木較不講求木材材質，棺木外觀都會上漆或是貼皮處理。
例如：碧玉、芙蓉碧玉，它的毛細孔是比較密，硬度相對的也比較硬。 以台灣地形四面環海來說，因為環境濕氣比較潮濕，所以以寶石類的密度來說，在台灣是對骨灰受潮防範度是最好的石類。 若不小心有天災，因寶石類的硬度夠硬，所以對骨灰的保護也比較有利。
那是在骨灰罐內附加一個鈦合金類的容器，將骨灰放入之後，會先將此容器做一個密封，再將外部封好，如此一來防潮性較佳。 若不幸遇到天災地震意外，外部的玉石若碎裂，內部的金屬容器也不容易損壞，最好也選購有防火材質的骨灰罐。 骨灰罐材質沒有所謂的熟優孰劣，只有價格能不能負擔，和喜不喜歡、看不看得順眼的問題。 冬瓜行旅提醒各位，挑選時別忘了還需將塔位地點和塔位規格納入考量，以免晉塔時才發現骨灰罈尺寸不合放不進去，那可真的是糗大了呀。
