The medieval village in Norfolk is decreasing due to climate change. The seashore town of Happisburgh is losing metres to waves every year. There are many explanations why the coast there is eroding so hastily: Rock types-the cliffs are made from sands and clay which slump when wet and are less resistant. Naturally narrow beaches-these beaches give less protection from the might of the waves. The cliffs are six to ten metres high, and consist of sand, silts and clay much alike to the North and South, a position that places even more pressure on cliffs. It would take around £15 million to close the gap in sea defences and protect the town. It has lost land to the sea throughout many centuries. The rate has been erratic: at times large areas have vanished overnight, and others the cliff has remained virtually the same.
