The band was formed in Texas by bassist Vinnie Paul and drummer Darrell Abbott in 1981, but it was in the mid-to-late 80s when this group of powerhouse musicians hit the scene that they really started to make a name for themselves as the kings of heavy metal. Their debut release, Cowboys from Hell, set the bar high for their genre spanning riffs and aural delights.
The aforementioned album was followed by the band's 6th and final studio effort Reinventing the Steel, which was no slouch in the production department, but it wasn't until 2003 that a final Pantera tour saw this Texas quartet take to the stage for one last time. Their illustrious demise was a result of internal disputes and the murder of guitarist Dimebag Darrell in late 2004.
