A Castle on Oregon's Coast
Oregon's shoreline has lots of secrets: veiled pleasures and surprises, clandestine, deserted beaches and surprise gems peppering the towns in the form of lodgings or restaurants.
Maybe the most stunning trick on all of Oregon's coast lies just outside of the art and culture mecca of Cannon Beach, on the north coast. There's a castle a bit south of town, hidden behind the walls of trees simply north of the Arch Cape Tunnel. You can become king and queen here, at this remarkably romantic spot that resembles something in between the Bavarian castle that inspired Disneyland's signature structure and the Oregon ski lodge included in "The Shining."
St. Bernard's Bed & Breakfast is a classy and impressive construction peppered with artistic information, containing 7 striking guestrooms filled with antiques, beautiful furnishings and a sense of the Victorian fused with contemporary grace.
On one specific night in April, I arrive at St. Bernard's close to 8:30 p.m., and it's pitch black. I've been here prior to a few times and seen bits of it, however for the first time I park in back, finding the charming strings of lights in the garden and on the walls, along with the 2 deer figures made from light bulbs. 인천op I stop to stare and glare at these, and at the archway going through the building, half expecting to see a member of some royal family appear in a carriage and be ushered out by some servant.
Inside the enormous front door, owner Barbara Dau invites me in and up the snaking, stone stairway into the living room. Here, chandeliers and sophisticated furniture occupy the location, with a clever little rounded nook in one corner - obviously part of the "tower." In the early evenings, Barbara hosts "social hours" for the guests here, including wine and sociability in front of the fireplace.
I arrive too late for this, of course, but Barbara informs me these can often be dynamic and fun-packed, while at other times none of the guests appear at all. It's a no-pressure event, and with unbelievable beaches simply a block away - who can blame them? Simply throughout the street are the beautiful, immaculate sands of Arch Cape, a tiny unincorporated neighborhood which includes one store and a smattering of homes. In front of it sits a gorgeous stretch of beach that runs for miles to the north, while immediately to the south hovers a craggy basalt cliff, where access to a weird and wild rocky cove is sometimes given by low tides.
The spaces at St. Bernard's Bed & Breakfast are jaw dropping - at the really least. The "Ginger" ($179) includes blue and white fabrics, oriental ginger jars and a love seat, with a king size bed from Austria. In "Gaugin" ($169) there's a relaxing window seat, a funky tub, muted pastels of a queen and the artist size bed.
My space was the "Tapestry" ($209), with an unbelievable economy size bed, engaging tapestries on the wall and floor, a huge French armoire, and enormous soaking tub that screams honeymoon hangout. There's a curious little reading nook with a stained glass ceiling, and the TV comes enclosed in an adorable replica of a castle.
During the night, the ocean was the only noise you heard: relaxing and relaxing beyond belief.
In the early morning, I discover the window (paradoxically) looks right out to a view of Castle Rock - simply offshore from Arch Cape.
Morning also indicates a luscious, premium, home prepared meal prepared by Dau herself. Dau was a chemist in her previous life in Chicago, and joked that meal making must be an extension of that part of chemists that like to prepare things. (Given this castle vibe, I laugh to myself and envision her in a lab coat, cackling maniacally as she works up a dish while lighting thunders all around).
Guests sit together in the stunning atrium-like dining-room, where they get and talk to know each other. I sat with a young couple from Portland and another older couple from Michigan who have actually been regulars considering that the place started in 1995. They were amongst the very first visitors in its first two weeks.
Besides these various, unforgettable facilities, St. Bernard's offers present certificates. Dau likewise offers wedding event bundles that accommodate up to 60 individuals and her signature, fascinating cooking.
Other alluring aspects of this area consist of more secret beaches just to the south and north. Its most intriguing landmark is a portion of roadway blasted out of a basalt promontory - a residue of when the beaches were the only genuine highway the seaside region had, back around 1910.
