Work
This week, I was able to get back on track following the break for Christmas. We're in the process of upgrading our databases and will be switching next week. Also, we looked at an ADR (architecture decisions record) for email notifications.
There aren't many of the team members who is back yet, so it was still an uncharacteristically slow week.
Books
This week, I read:
M. John Harrison's Centauri Device
This book is a great illustration of why I am a fan of the S. F. Masterworks series. It was a great book, although it was sometimes a bit confusing (or maybe I was exhausted at the time) however it was definitely enjoyable and contained some interesting concepts (like the space anarchists and their captured alien spaceships). The Wikipedia article reveals this book revolutionized Space Opera by turning the old tropes upside down!
Now that I know that I can think back to other, more modern books I've read, and observe the influence. And I know from where these ideas came from.
Gaming
This week I bought Dyson Sphere Program. It was something I had been aware of for a while, but had not felt the need to try it. This week I was able to feel the need to.
It took me 30 hours to complete it in only four days. It's addicting and great fun. It's like solving a puzzle. When you do it correctly it's a satisfying method to build small and efficient assembly lines. You also have to consider the additional challenge of building neat factories. Since you're moving towards the poles, gridlines shift and the square grid is on a sphere, this creates a bit more complexity.
I'm not quite there yet with a dyson sphere yet. Minecraft Servers Bits aren't working. I'm always running out of oil because I don't burn hydrogen fast enough. The conveyor belts then back up and block the refineries.
It's also very entertaining.
Miscellaneous
This week I created fail2ban and an IP blocklist on my VPN. This was made simple by NixOS, and I now have a better firewall.
The issue with blocking IPs is that it's simple to circumvent however, there's a particular IP that keeps trying to connect to my (whitelisted) Minecraft server, and seeing these logs in the logs numerous times a day was getting annoying.
