Minecraft game includes Ordnance Survey GB terrain data By Matthew Wall Technology reporter, BBC News
23 September 2013
Minecraft, the well-known video game that lets you build and creating monsters, allows you to incorporate Ordnance Survey terrain data from Great Britain into your blockwork virtual world.
The game's 33 million players are able to create worlds on top of accurate landscapes covering 224,000 sq km (86,000 sq miles) of Britain.
Joseph Braybrook, an intern with OS's Innovation Labs, created the GB Minecraft world in just two weeks.
It uses free OS OpenData products.
Graham Dunlop, OS Innovation Lab Manager, said that "we believe we've built the largest Minecraft world ever" Based on real-world data.
"The map that resulted shows the huge potential, not just to use Minecraft for computer technology and geography purposes in schools, but also the vast array of applications available for OS OpenData too."
Minecraft was invented in 2009 by Swede Markus "Notch", and is a virtual world that is made up cubes of different materials like rock, sand, and lava.
Players can collaborate to build shelters, construct items from raw materials and fight off various creatures.
The OS GB world contains more than 22 billion Minecraft blocks.
After downloading the map to Minecraft players can then access the 3D virtual realm through OS's head office located in Southampton. From there they can recreate the real-world features like Stonehenge or imagine buildings like Hogwarts castle.
Extremecraft
The OS map products OS Terrain 50 and OS VectorMap OS Terrain 50 and OS VectorMap - combine to create an 3D model of the earth surface overlaid with features like water, woodland and roads.
You can build your own structures and structures on top.
As OS is the UK's national mapping authority, its information covers the mainland and its surrounding islands but not Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man or Channel Islands.
