Gold4rs has now created their own gold-selling site on a different domain, "gold4fun". It is now believed that the domain name "gold4rs.com" is still owned by the gold-selling company, since it is using a permanent redirect function to redirect surfers to their new website.
Did the company behind gold4rs violate any copyright issues by using rs on their website url? Most likely not. There have been similar problems in the past with wordpress.org where the company was suing owners of websites for using the word "wordpress" in their domain names. Extrememining.Net After settlements in court were reached, it was determined that the word "wp" which is an acceptable alternative, will be in line with copyright laws.
In the same way, it's similar to runescape. If Jagex were to really sue some gold-selling and bot businesses in court, due to the cause of them having the "rs" acronym in their website name, they would not prevail. After all, nobody owns the alphabet!
However, I was wondering, is that Jagex's only strategy to combat botting and trading in the real world? I hope they have an actual plan... because this will not take them very far.
Gold4RS reports that it sells between 6 and 8 trillion gold in runescape each year. That's around 6 million US dollars with current pricing.
