Minecraft's ray tracing function for Windows 10 has made its debut in beta for eight months following the feature first became available for testers. The introduction of ray tracer support for NVIDIA's RTX graphics cards transforms the game's appearance into one that's, well, shinier. As we said in our hands-on review earlier this year the realistic lighting, reflections and shadows this feature provides make Minecraft feel more immersive. The game is as blocky as ever, but the in-game sunlight is real, for example reflections and shadows can make you feel as if you're in a virtual world.
To be able to enjoy the benefits of ray tracing to the game, you'll need run it on a PC using a GPU from NVIDIA that can handle ray tracing. The benefits it offers will only be apparent in worlds and maps that use a special physically based rendering texture pack, but you don't need to perform anything to enable it - it's already turned on by default. Tutamail Other players who do not have access to the feature will simply see those worlds with standard visuals.
NVIDIA announced that ray tracing puts greater demands on your GPU. So, it employs its DLSSAI rendering technology to ensure Minecraft runs at least 60 frames per second, at a resolution of 1080x 1920. The most advanced GPU models (RTX 3080 and 3090) can play the game at 4K with over 60FPS.
You can download the worlds you can play with Ray Tracing from the Marketplace or make your own with the assistance from NVIDIA's starter pack in case you require it. NVIDIA and Minecraft are also releasing two new worlds for free: Colosseum RTX has already been released, while Dungeon dash RTX will be available shortly.
