A Dutch teenager was assaulted and threatened with a knife after an argument over virtual possessions in the popular online fantasy game RuneScape.

The 13-year-old boy was targeted because he "picked up" an amulet and mask while playing, which two other teenagers also wanted too.

They kicked him and swung knives, and then forced him to log into RuneScape and surrender the items.

RuneScape was created in 2001, is home to around 10 million active players, who are believed to be regular users.

It is located in the medieval world of Gielinor which is comprised of rolling hills covered in grass and vast areas of woodland.

The game holds Guinness World Records for world's most popular free role playing game.

In 2009, a hacker broke into computer accounts and stole virtual characters and their possessions from RuneScape and was given a police warning.

A few months prior to that, a RuneScape account was sold on eBay for $46,000.

Although the assault happened in 2007 and the two attackers were sentenced in 2009, one of them appealed to the Dutch Supreme Court.

Yesterday however, the Netherlands highest court upheld the theft conviction.

The suspect's lawyer had argued the amulet and the mask were not tangible or material and, unlike for example electricity, were of no economic value.'

The Court declared that the virtual objects were of intrinsic value to the player at 13 years old due to the time and energy he spent in winning them while playing.

The names of the defendants have been kept secret because they were juveniles and the defendant that appealed was sentenced to 144 hours of community service.
