According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Avanos Medical is recalling the Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System due to the misplacement of nasogastric or nasoente tubes has led to injury and death of patients. Avanos Medical The recall includes 629 devices sold in the United States.
Avanos has marketed the Cortrak*2 Entraal Access System to help with the placement of a medical-feeding tube. Patients may experience injuries to their vocal chords or trachea if the tube has been placed in a wrong way. Pneumothorax (collapsed lung) or pneumothorax, perforation (a gap or hole within the lung's wall), pneumonia, and Pleural effusion (excess liquid between the lungs, chest cavity) are a few of the injuries.
Avanos Medical described a plan for users to get updated labeling to confirm proper placement of the nasogastric tubes and nasoenteric pipes before use
Avanos is the FDA's second warning about inserting feeding tubes. Two cases of child strangulation involving feeding tubes wrapped around the necks of patients were reported by 2021.
