The Avanos MedicalCortrak*2 enteral access system is designed to allow health care workers to insert medical feed tubes into the stomach or the small intestine of patients who require nutrition. There have been 23 deaths reported up to date due to feeding tubes in 2015.
There have been numerous reports of injuries as well as patient deaths that have occurred when nasogastric tubes were misplaced while this device is used to help with their place.
The recall was utilized to create revisions to the device’s labels and instructions for use and intended uses. The new instructions advise users to check the placement of the tube based on their institution's protocols prior to using the tube for delivering nutrition.
