Description
The interest and activity in computing education for children is growing. In the meantime, Minecraft has become a massive cultural phenomenon as a fun, motivating platform that encourages play and exploration. This talk demonstrates how Python can be used to teach programming while exploring the world of Minecraft. We will explore ways to create learning environments, curricula, and case studies. Abstract
The enthusiasm and involvement in computing education for children is increasing across all levels from government-sponsored initiatives to our own Python community. Finding age-appropriate materials and environments that are both educational and inspiring is always a problem, particularly for those who are younger in their programming. However, Minecraft has become a massive cultural phenomenon, capturing the imaginations and hearts of our young people. Millions of hours have been spent on Minecraft, shaping and crafting worlds and drawing the attention of its users. It stands out as an enjoyable, stimulating platform that encourages play and exploration. This presentation will explore the importance of playing in education, the basic principles of motivation and how it applies to teaching programming. What can Minecraft and its virtual world solve these issues? We will explore the different tools and methods that can be used to enable Python-based interactions with the Minecraft world. The available Python APIs for Minecraft will be discussed along with example curriculum and projects. The tools and environments we will discuss will be able to meet the requirements of Minecraft on both PC and iMac versions. Rockets Mail One Minecraft and Minecraft PI and we will also discuss how to create appropriate learning environments for your personal use. Learn about experiences and success in other communities. Outcome: Parents and educators will leave with a better understanding of Minecraft, its capabilities, and its significance in education. They will also be taught how to teach Python programming through play within the Minecraft world. Participants will be provided with information on resources that can be used to teach Python and the steps required to create learning environments.
